Greystone Hotels’ Earth Day Donation to The Nature Conservancy

Greystone Hotels was proud to present The Nature Conservancy with a check with our Earth Day contribution. A portion of all room and meeting room revenue from the nine Greystone properties acquired on Earth Day, April 22, was donated to their environmental conservation effort.

We at Greystone Hotels are also making strides toward a ‘greener’ hospitality industry internally and are continuously working to reduce our carbon footprint with environmentally conscious initiatives such as using green amenities, green cleaning products, recycling and our newly added electric car charging stations at the Creekside Inn.

It was an honor to be able to contribute to the vision of the Nature Conservancy as we continue to make efforts to better our planet.

Celebrating the Planet- Hotel Griffon Green Team Style!

Greystone Hotels is proud to share that many of our employees are not only helping the environment at the hotel property level by recycling, reducing, re-using and utilizing Earth-friendly products, but our team is also making a difference to save the planet while “off the clock!” To honor Earth Day, members of the Hotel Griffon “Green Team” participated in a beach and creek rehabilitation project at Muir Beach, within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, just north of San Francisco.

The team braved a cool and cloudy morning on April 23, in order to have some fun and give back to Mother Earth. The Hotel Griffon “Green Team” removed invasive weeds and planted native plants in order to restore habitat loss and preserve the local biodiversity of the wetlands.

Greystone Hotels is environmentally conscious and is always making efforts to make green initiatives and reduce our carbon footprint. We have recently installed electric car charging stations at the Creekside Inn in Palo Alto and all of the Greystone properties will be donating a portion of all room and meeting space revenue that was generated on Earth Day, April 22, to a leading nature conservation organization.

Creekside Inn Electric Car Charging Stations

Some big things have been happening around the Creekside Inn, and the property got the star treatment last week surrounding the ribbon-cutting of our new electric car charging stations!

See below for a copy of our Press Release, and for some video taken of the event.

PALO ALTO, CA (April 18, 2011) — Palo Alto Mayor Sid Espinosa (pictured below at left) joined Eric Horodas, President of Greystone Hotels, to cut the ribbon on the new electric car charging stations at the Creekside Inn in Palo Alto, CA last Friday, April 15.

With the number of electric cars on the road today in California estimated to grow significantly as gas prices continue to rise and more alternative energy cars become available, the Creekside Inn in Palo Alto, a member of the Greystone Hotels group, has become one of the first hotels in the state to offer two electric car charging stations.

The car charging station, from ChargePoint (Coulomb Technologies) will be offered as a complimentary amenity to both hotel and non-hotel guests. It will take approximately eight hours to charge an empty battery, or about four hours for one that is not entirely empty.

According to Mr. Luis Carreno, General  Manager of the Creekside Inn, “We have been practicing green procedures which include recycling, green cleaning products, green amenities, and the installation of water and energy savings devices provided by the City of Palo Alto. We decided the car charging stations were a natural next step and received a grant from the United States Department of Energy and the American Recovery Act.”

The Creekside Inn is a boutique hotel located in the center of Silicon Valley, California.  The hotel offers 136 rooms and suites in a beautiful creek side garden setting just minutes from downtown Palo Alto, Stanford University, Stanford Hospital, Hewlett Packard, NASA, and Google.  In its commitment to being eco-conscious, the hotel also offers a complimentary hybrid car service within a five-mile radius of the hotel.

“The King’s Speech” Connection to the King George Hotel

“The King’s Speech” was a big winner at the Academy Awards, winning four Oscars including Best Actor and Best Picture. The film depicts the trials and successes of King George VI as he works to overcome a speech impediment that could have prevented him from uniting England during WWII.

King George VI was the son of King George V, the namesake of the Greystone Hotel in San Francisco, the King George Hotel. With “The King’s Speech” bringing a focus on the history of King George VI, we at Greystone turned our attention to “our” King George. What is the history of our hotel? How did the King George Hotel come to be?

A little history of the creation of the King George Hotel…

Courtesy SF Public Library

The King George Hotel was built in 1914, in time for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915. The Exposition was a great affair for San Francisco, because less than 10 years before, over 80% of the city had been destroyed by the Great 1906 Earthquake and the fires that followed. The Exposition was a chance for San Francisco to rebuild, and to take in revenue. It is a period that is credited as a time of celebration and reconstruction of the city and its “rise from the ashes.”

All of the visitors to the Exposition needed a place to stay and The King George was built in order to accommodate them. Visitors from around the world were able to enjoy the King George Hotel and newly beautified San Francisco due to the

completion of the Panama Canal in 1914. The King George was advertised as being “Absolutely Fireproof” which appealed to many after the devastating earthquake and fire in 1906. The hotel was designed to equip guests in affordable elegance by 1914 standards. The original proprietors had initially had shared baths and large closets (certainly for hotels by today’s standards) to accommodate steam trunks. Even today there are many original historical details (but no more shared baths) that make the King George Hotel a charming place to stay in San Francisco.

Greystone Hotels is proud of the rich history of the King George Hotel, and in the history and traditions surrounding its position in the Union Square neighborhood, and we’re all glad to see “The King’s Speech” as the big winner this year!

Reflections on Healthy Achievements of 2010

The Hotel Griffon staff has made some big strides towards health consciousness in this last year under the tutelage of our General Manager, Norbert Mede. Norbert is a bit of an athlete himself, having completed 2 half marathons, 2 Olympic distance triathlons and numerous shorter running events.

Since joining the Hotel Griffon in 2008, Norbert’s mission has been to make the Hotel shine along with the many members of his team. His commitment to the environment and the wellbeing of his guests and staff is second to none.

The hotel industry hasn’t traditionally been accepted as being very “Green” – I’m sure you can remember all those years when you’d visit a hotel with plastic cups in bathrooms, collections of throw-away bottles of shampoo, or when you weren’t asked if you could re-use your sheets and towels or recycle your newspapers!

Now is a new era for hoteliers, especially the independent boutique hotelier, to make a mark on their product through the environmental values they believe in, and to deliver excellent service while to enhancing their level of hospitality, and Norbert’s style and ethos is a fine example of this.

Besides the hotel achieving accolades for sustainability certifications, lowering energy bills and cutting costs on water and garbage (and all the physical and operational things you can do within a hotel to be “Green”) it has been Norbert’s mission to also improve the health of his staff by offering educational “teach-ins” with nutritionists, personal trainers, and other health mined professionals, and by organizing weekly runs along the Embarcadero along the water’s edge. Front Desk workers, housekeepers, housemen and members of the Sales Team have all participated and encouraged one another, making this a great team-building experience.

As an avid runner himself, Norbert says there are few places to run that are as lovely as the Embarcadero, which runs in front of the hotel, past landmarks like the Ferry Building, Fisherman’s Wharf, the Maritime Museum, Fort Mason, Crissy Field in the Presidio and even to the Golden Gate, depending on how far you want to go.

A crowning achievement for “Team Griffon” (the moniker assigned to those in the fitness club Norbert started) was when 11 of the Hotel Griffon staff members participated in the 2010 Bridge to Bridge walk/ run on October 28th. For all but 2 of the group, it was the first-ever participation in an organized running event. Excitement was in the air at the start and the sense of accomplishment at the end was undeniably tangible.

The run started outside the hotel at the Ferry Building and proceeded all the way to the Presidio. Participants could choose a 7k or 12k course. Most opted for the 12k run, or 7.45 miles for you non-runners, or non-metric system users! The Bridge to Bridge run is dubbed “Americas Most Beautiful Run” as the vistas of the bay, Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge and the SF skyline make this a truly enjoyable event.

It was a proud day for Norbert and the staff as the run was the culmination of his year long quest to improve the health awareness of the staff, many of whom either did not think their bodies could complete the event at the beginning of the year and others who have been combating diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and similar aliments.

We are all proud of the achievements, dedication and determination of Norbert and “Team Griffon” and look forward to more of us participating in the year to come. I know it’s on more than one of our resolution lists! Next event for Team Griffon is the Kaiser ½ Marathon and 5K run on February 6th, 2011. See you there!

A MESSAGE FROM ERIC HORODAS, PRESIDENT OF GREYSTONE HOTELS.

Welcome to this first edition of the Greystone Hotels blog.

With the recent launch of our updated portal site I hope to use this forum as a way of keeping you – our guests – informed of developments and news about the company and our hotel and restaurant portfolio.

Like most people, my personal and business travel experiences were an integral factor in shaping my attitude to the lodging industry.  I quickly developed a preference for hotels with high service levels and standards; preferring older hotels in great locations that had been updated and well maintained.  I especially liked hotels where, as a frequent traveler, the staff and management knew me and addressed me by name!  This approach was far preferable than that adopted at large, impersonal properties with generic decor and complicated front desk processes.

In starting Greystone Hotels my vision was to create a hotel company and a collection of properties that projected these preferences.  As a result most of our hotels are intimate, have distinctive custom designed decor and provide high levels of customer service.  Our company tag-line, Experience Exceptional Service, epitomizes our company philosophy. Our only goal is to serve you, our guest, and make your hotel stay your ‘home away from home’. My management group and our 330 highly-trained and enthusiastic team members are committed to that end.

Since its inception in 1995, Greystone Hotels has expanded its hotel portfolio to a total of nine hotels located in key business and leisure destinations  such as San Francisco, Palo Alto, Los Angeles, San Diego and Bend, Oregon.  We have a pride of ownership philosophy, continually reinvesting funds into our hotels through renovations, upgrades and timely maintenance to keep each property sharp, fresh and appealing to our guests! Just as we have a long-term investment philosophy when it comes to the ownership of our hotels, we seek to establish and maintain long term relationships with our guests.

In the end, however, our approach and success depends on you – our guest!  Your feedback on our efforts is critical to shaping our direction.  My team and I welcome your thoughts, comments and suggestions on ways to make your stay with Greystone Hotels truly a ‘home away from home’.

I invite you to come visit our properties, portal and the Greystone Hotels blog for regular updates on how you can Experience Exceptional Service at Greystone Hotels.

Regards,

Eric Horodas, President
